David A. Poulsen has been a rodeo competitor and rodeo clown, rock singer, high school football coach, stage and film actor, freelance television broadcaster and college English instructor. His writing career began in earnest in 1984 when his short story The Welcomin’ won the Alberta Culture Short Story Writing Competition. David’s best-selling young adult “Rodeo Trilogy” with its three books: The Cowboy Kid, Ride for the Crown and Ride the High Country is in its second edition. His most recent books are the award winning Billy and the Bearman, The Hunk Machine (second title in the young adult series The Salt and Pepper Chronicles--The Vampire’s Visit was the first), and the children’s picture book Tractor Trouble. 1997 also saw the publication of The Cowboy Country Cookbook that David co-authored with Lauren Hitchner and Barb Poulsen. His first western, Teacher’s Gun, will be coming from Red Deer College Press in 1999. He is presently working on a young adult novel about a young offender. David’s eighteen years behind the microphone at rodeos throughout North America have earned him three appearances at the Canadian Finals Rodeo and eleven consecutive stints at the Calgary Stampede. He was also seen in two episodes of the television series The Black Stallion and the feature film Convict Cowboy. David raises quarter horses and Texas Longhorn cattle on a picturesque ranch (El Rancho Pequino) in the foothills near Claresholm, Alberta, Canada.
