Once in a while a new release appears on the vast musical landscape that grabs the listener's ear in a most engaging way and just won't let go. Alberta singer-songwriter Anne Beverly Brown's new CD: Keyhole and the Eternal Kiss is one of those compelling musical packages. What adds to the sparkle of this welcome release it that it comes to us courtesy of one of the small, independent Canadian labels, AKASHIC RECORDS. Production values are of the first order. The care and attention to musical detail which producer-engineer David Cebuliak has lavished on this musical enterprise shine with pristine clarity on every track.
From the evocatively erotic title track to the mystical 'Rivers of Eden` to the melancholic 'Never Thought I'd Sing The Blues,' Brown displays her considerable musical and poetic talents while she explores an eclectic array of musical styles. And she does it in such great company. The creme de la creme of Calgary's folk and jazz crowd - Oscar Lopez, Cathy Miller, Karl Roth - are a formidable presence in the Ark sessions ( the first seven tracks). On the last three tracks, collectively entitled The Santa Fe Sessions and recorded initially in 1989, guitarist Arlen Johnson, keyboard player Kevin Zoernig and saxophonist Dave Anderson provide inspired accompaniments.
This CD is a scintillating blend of music, metaphor and metaphics. Through imagery and music we are transported from the Somerset town of Glastonbury to Cleopatra's barge to the tin pan streets of "roaring twenties Chicago." All along the way Brown provides authentic celestial insights even sharper than those beaming back to us from the new-look Hubble Telescope.

A fascinatingly complex and intriguing talent that is Anne Beverly Brown, 'Keyhole And The Eternal Kiss' (her first album originally released in 1993) displays a voice playing the game by her own rules, mixing elements of folk, jazz and ambient style altogether, arriving at something fresh and different. 'The Rivers of Eden' has her cornish-cream vocals spinning a tale of soul attraction and much more. 'The Old Road' continues her semi-storytelling vein and 'The Man Who Planted Trees' is a gently commanding narrative. Brown's songs cover a wide sweep of influences and are tied together seamlessly. Quietly compelling and breathtaking, Anne Beverly Brown is a rare discovery.

Anne Beverly Brown is a singer-songwriter who has combined wonderfully poetic lyricism with fine musicianship to create a wholly enjoyable little album. I say "little" because The Santa Fe Sessions has only three songs. Brown has opted for quality over quantity, and this certainly is a high-quality offering. On 'Indigo Blue` she sings, in a low voice vaguely reminiscent of Tanika Tikaram, of a Blakeian journey towards the freedom of innocence. The production values and musicianship are several steps above the average independent release. This teaser is promised to be followed by a full-length recording of her songs soon.
